Primetimers Event Coming in May!
April 6, 2015
Henderson Settlement is hosting an educational ministry event for older adults (50+). This year, Henderson Settlement will be hosting a Primetimers event April 26th-May 2nd, 2015, and the cost is $600.
Henderson Settlement has been “at the heart of poverty” since 1925 when it was organized to provide loving assistance to those living in the area and struggling with ongoing lifestyle of poverty. The Settlement brings together the incredible faith of this Appalachian community and the harsh reality of rural poverty. Several life-sustaining programs are in place and will be studied and observed by Primetimers participants. There will be emphasis on the various types of poverty present in our lives, including spiritual and physical poverty. The related service opportunities will also be at the Settlement and part of the ongoing ministries there. There may be one or more visits with area residents in their homes.
Interactive learning sessions are scheduled so that participants will have a more comprehensive understanding of poverty, its root causes and perpetual cycle that pervades this issue. Several scholars with experience in this area will lead these discussions. During these few days the classroom will be made into a living room. We will take a field trip to The Museum of Appalachia in Norris, Tennessee as well as make some visits to some local people’s homes to get to know them. An Appalachian storyteller will give a presentation to the group. This event will give participants insights on how to respond to poverty in a loving and Christ-like manner. The goal is that one may have a better understanding of poverty and know how to begin transforming their home churches and communities.
The deadline to sign up for Primetimers is April 12th. If you would like to register or have any questions, please contact Amy Sell at (606)337-3613 ext. 326 or email her at christianed@hsumc.org.
