Charge Conference Technical Updates for 2023
|
It's Charge Conference season again. We've added a Creation Care form, but other than that, the paperwork remains the same. We've made it easy for you, and here are some key points to help. Remember to submit compensation, local church leaders, and the fund balance report through the respective module in Brick River, and charge conference forms through "Submittable Forms" in the Church Dashboard. Contact IT Services at (704) 464-0994 or it@wnccumc.org if you encounter technical issues. For questions about the forms, get in touch with your district.

To the clergy and laity of the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church,
The 36 plaintiff churches and The Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church have reached a resolution which resolves all litigation pending between them by mutual agreement. Is the UMC Really...? Part 6
|
With some congregations considering leaving The United Methodist Church or just wondering about its future, Ask The UMC offers a series of questions and answers to help clear up some common misperceptions or misinformation around disaffiliation.
This is part 6: The Effects of Disaffiliation Including Property Retention & Legal Counsel
We respond to more of your questions about The United Methodist Church, disaffiliation, and the effects of disaffiliation including property retention and legal counsel.
Questions answered in this article:
Is The UMC Really....?
1. Letting churches in multi-point charges retain their property, including parsonages, if the local church that actually owns the parsonage disaffiliates?
2. Telling local churches considering disaffiliation not to seek legal counsel?
3. Prohibiting disaffiliating local churches and United Methodist individuals from retaining assets in United Methodist foundations and credit unions?
4. Ending scholarships for students who are members of local churches who disaffiliate, or who may disaffiliate themselves?

Webinars: Our Health, Our Changing World
|
Just as we cannot separate our bodies from our souls, we cannot separate our lives from the world around us. Recently, a podcaster said, “I’m addicted to breathing.” That’s an addiction we all share. Yet we take for granted how the world around us impacts our health. We tend to silo things, separating issues into their own category and blinding ourselves to the connections between these categories. In terms of health, we separate our physical health, mental health, and the health of our environment, often not grasping the interrelatedness of it all.
Two of our Season of Creation webinars will be addressing this connection between our health and our changing world. Click the link below for more information and to register for the webinars.

Installation of a North Carolina State Sign Remembering The Allen School, a Methodist Church Supported School for Girls in Asheville
|
The Allen School provided a high-quality college preparatory education for African American girls, during segregation, until 1974. It was a boarding school supported by the Women's Division of Christian Service of The United Methodist Church. Many high school girls from Western North Carolina and other regions of the United States attended that school when it was impossible to receive a quality education in their own hometowns.
A North Carolina State historical marker memorializing the Allen School will be installed in downtown Asheville on October 21 at 2 PM. A reception hosted by Explore Asheville will follow from 2-4:30 PM at the former site of The Allen School, now 27 College Place. It will take place in the Allen School Buildings of the 1950s.
