Who are these with you?

September 11, 2020

We all know about Esau and Jacob’s reunion. Jacob comes home after decades away and, always the strategist, he surrounds himself with family, extended family, and servants as he makes his final approach.

Esau looks up and asks the question – Who are these with you?

Jacob’s reply is ours as well – These are the children God has entrusted to my care.

At Methodist Home for Children, these are the children God has entrusted to our care: Juvenile offenders, unparented, failing in school, looking in the wrong places for acceptance; teenagers, struggling with mental illness and substance abuse; children, neglected and abused.

We see hope in each one of them and we work so that they, too, can see and live into their God-given potential.

By now you may know that Methodist Home for Children is an Approved Ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. You may not know, however, that we’ve been in ministry with you in Western North Carolina for 12 years.

Last year alone, Methodist Home for Children served 257 children and families from Western Conference counties, and that capacity is expanding with two new programs:

In April we opened our Forsyth County Transitional Living Home in Winston-Salem, and in October we will open our Union County Group Home in Monroe. These new homes help to fill urgent needs in Central and Western North Carolina, where we already have the long-serving Macon County Group Home in Franklin and two Crisis & Assessment Centers in Winston-Salem and Asheville.

Almost without exception, the youth in these programs come to us without the benefit of a family safety net and all of the normal protections and experiences that adolescents need growing up.
