WNC UMC Next: Holy Conferencing

June 13, 2019

Are you concerned about what’s next for the United Methodist Church?  Do you believe the Traditional Plan is inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ and our Wesleyan heritage?  Do you want to see the the discriminatory language and restrictions and penalties against LGBTQ persons removed from the Book of Discipline?  Do you want the United Methodist Church to be truly open to all people?

You are not alone.

UMC Next is a newly formed grassroots movement working toward a hope-filled future for the global Methodist movement.  A national gathering was convened in May with at least 10 representatives from each Annual Conference. It was truly a “holy conference” - a Spirit-led time of beginning to discern what God will do next through the people called Methodists.

For this movement to continue, we need YOU.

On Wednesday, June 19th at 6:00 p.m. we will gather in that same spirit of holy conferencing.  Come, hear more about what took place at UMC Next. Bring your questions, your fears, your experience, your ideas, and your hopes.  Find support and offer support to others. Join us as we continue to discern what comes next.

You can help us now by sharing this invitation with anyone you know - clergy or laity - who might want to come and have a “holy conference” with us!

The Four Commitments of UMC Next:

  1. We long to be passionate followers of Jesus Christ, committed to a Wesleyan vision of Christianity, anchored in scripture and informed by tradition, experience and reason as we live a life of personal piety and social holiness.

  2. We are committed to resisting evil, injustice and oppression in all forms and toward all people and building a church which affirms the full participation of all ages, nations, races, classes, cultures, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities.

  3. We reject the Traditional Plan approved at General Conference 2019 as inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ and will resist its implementation.

  4. We will work to eliminate discriminatory language and the restrictions and penalties in the Discipline regarding LGBTQ persons. We affirm the sacred worth of LGBTQ persons, celebrate their gifts, and commit to being in ministry together.

Follow Jesus. Make Disciples. Transform the World.
