On October 24, 2022, Asheboro gained an incredible new Shelter for Women and Families called Lydia's Place. This is the first shelter for women and families in Randolph County. Their mission is to "Disrupt the cycle of homelessness for women and families and promote sustained independence for those seeking secure housing."
Lydia’s Place will serve women, children, and families experiencing homelessness in central North Carolina by providing a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for temporary housing – often the first step in establishing sustainable independence.
"Lydia's Place is an endeavor of the entire community. Because of our individual donors, local businesses, granting foundations, state and local government, and the support of the faith community, we will be ready to open the shelter in the coming weeks. Thank you for all you have already given and all that you will do to sustain Lydia's Place.
Many thanks to The Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church for nurturing the vision for this shelter by providing the building and funding for the Executive Director.
We are grateful for Wesley Community Development Corporation's project oversight and for the construction expertise of S.E. Trogdon & Sons, Inc in completing these renovations. Special thanks to Delta Plumbing and Electrical Contractor, Asheboro Fire and Security, Inc, Pella Windows and Doors in Greensboro, Wagner's Lawn and Land Service, and Pro Style Layout Design and Printing for their support."
This incredible project emerged from a desire to reimagine ministry at the property of the former Calvary UMC in Asheboro. It is the fruition of a collaboration between the Office of Church Development for the Western NC Conference, Wesley CDC, First UMC Asheboro, and the Uwharrie District who are constantly seeking ways to be the Church in tangible ways.
Rev. Alexis Coleman, Executive Director, along with the Board of Directors hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony and are excited to see God at work at Lydia's Place. For more information on Lydia's Place and to donate, click HERE.
