NC Council of Churches Promote Death Penalty Abolition Sabbath

October 6, 2021

The North Carolina Council of Churches is promoting the weekend of Oct. 8-10, 2021, as Death Penalty Abolition Sabbath and is encouraging all faith communities to learn, preach, and pray about this matter. Please use the toolkit –key scriptures, sermon starter, litany, and prayers– on this abolition sabbath weekend and share with your denominations and faith groups in your local communities.

The NC Council of Churches is also hosting an event on Oct. 10th in collaboration with the North Carolina Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (NCCADP) with those most impacted by our capital punishment system. Panelists include George Wilkerson, who is living on NC’s death row; Andre Smith, who teaches Buddhism to men in prison and lost his son to homicide; and Rev. Sharon Risher, who lost her mother and two cousins in the shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Register for this event here
