ATLANTA  — Faith communities and United Methodist congregations looking to learn more about what their church can do to improve health and wholeness in their local communities are being invited to gather in Atlanta for the 2018 United Methodist Church Day of Health.

Sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries, UMC Day of Health will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Dunwoody United Methodist Church located at 1548 Mt. Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA. 30338. The event is free but registrations are encouraged and available at https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ereg/index.php?eventid=299801&

Global Ministries and United Methodist Communications are also launching Hulapalooza at the Day of Health. This fun hula-hoop event will connect classic recreational activity to the Abundant Health initiative. A hula-hoop class will be offered in the morning session for all hula-hoop enthusiasts. All are welcome to attend Hulapalooza as part of the Abundant Health Fair from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Health care professionals will also provide HIV screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations, and fitness fun.

“Since the 1700s when John Wesley rode across the English countryside toting the Primitive Physick, his book of practical medical advice for all people, health has been of vital importance to Methodists,” said Olusimbo Ige, MD, MS, MPH, executive director of the Global Health program of Global Ministries. “Today, The United Methodist Church is working to bring better health to people in every place, from our own backyards to the world.”

“To further The United Methodist Church’s commitment to creating abundant health for all, Global Ministries in partnership with the North Georgia Annual Conference, is bringing together local United Methodist churches, health care coordinators, general agency representatives, global health partners, and affiliates for the UMC Day of Health,” Dr. Ige added. “We hope you join us to learn about the difference Abundant Health can make right where you live.”

The goal of UMC Day of Health is to showcase the work of the many United Methodist churches and partners engaged in innovative projects and programs that improve the health of their congregations and local communities.

Guest speakers include: Dr. John Blevins, acting director of the interfaith health program at Emory University; Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson, resident bishop of the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church; Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, resident bishop of the South Carolina Annual Conference; and Poonam Patodia, chief marketing officer, United Methodist Communications.

The event will also provide United Methodist churches with the tools and resources they need to successfully implement new health programs and ministries in their congregations and communities.

Churches and partners are encouraged to visually share their work through a poster gallery exhibit.
