Health and Wholeness Workshop in Hickory on May 5
April 5, 2017
We often hear the word “health” as the absence of disease and “peace” as the absence of war. We may be missing something with these definitions. Partners in Health and Wholeness invites you to a resource workshop that explores the possibilities for a health and wellness ministry that embraces the concept of Shalom “wholeness”. Shalom is completeness, wellness, flourishing even, of mind, body, spirit. The Greek translation when Jesus says your faith has made you whole uses the word “sozo” which is translated “to save”.
Partners in Health and Wholeness asks people of faith to consider the effort Jesus made to show that healing and saving were about the whole person—mind, body and spirit— both immediately and ultimately.
This resource workshop will present opportunities for considering health and wholeness through a lens of faith, in very practical ways. Presentations will include identifying health needs in our communities, developing community gardens from the ground up, building healthier food pantries, developing a health and wellness ministry, a health and wellness ministry as a part of a vital church, healthy aging and The Duke Endowment's support for faith, food and health initiatives.
We have a variety of speakers and presenters lined up that specifically address health priorities in the region: Kristen Richardson-Frick (The Duke Endowment), Kim Shockley (Church Vitality Strategist for the Catawba Valley District), Zack King (Catawba County Health Partners and Community Health Analyst), Holley Daghenhardt (Dietitian and Motivating Force Behind the Health and Wellness Ministry of FUMC Hickory), Cade Underwood (North Carolina Community Garden Partners), Sarah Evitt/Ayden Jones/Jeanne Dairaghi (NC Center for Health and Wellness and Area Agency on Aging for the Region), Kylie Foley (Rural Faith Community Fellow: Institute for Emerging Issues), Shannon Axtell Martin (Partners in Health and Wholeness).
