April 12, 2016
The World Methodist Museum invites hikers to join in hiking a segment of the Francis Asbury Trail on Saturday, April 23. From Mount Sterling Gap along a ridge of Scottish Mountain, up to about 4300 ft., this section ends at Cataloochee Creek, for a total of approximately 3.5 miles.
Free and open to the public, registration is required by contacting the Museum. Classified as a moderate hike, those participating need to bring a trail lunch and water for the hike. Comfortable dress with hiking shoes is recommended.
Asbury is featured in Museum exhibits, programs and this hike as the 200th Anniversary of his death is acknowledged and he is celebrated for dedicating his life to the spread of Methodism and Christianity.
“He traveled more than a quarter of million miles on a horse and in harsh conditions,” explains Jackie Bolden, Museum Director. “But perhaps more importantly he was in charge of the Circuit Riders and saw that each area from lower Georgia to Maine had an opportunity to hear the Word.”
“Join the hike on this short trail on a pretty day and imagine being alone, in severe weather conditions, and traveling day after day and year after year like this until you have traveled more than a quarter of a million miles,” she added.
Registration is required by the end of the day, Monday, April 18. To register for the hike, call the Museum at (828) 456-7242, email jbolden@worldmethodistcouncil.org, send a message on Facebook or stop by the Museum at 575 N. Lakeshore Dr., Lake Junaluska. Participants are to gather at the Museum and will depart promptly at 8:30 a.m.
