United Methodist Churches Invited To Explore Crisis Communications

August 10, 2015

After the tragedy in Charleston and shootings in other public places, Faith Communicators will explore how best to communicate in a crisis. The Charlotte-based networking group begins a new season of free monthly programs at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the Cornwell Center at Myers Park Baptist Church, 2001 Selwyn Avenue. Liz Chandler and David Coburn of Luquire George Andrews will lead a discussion on how houses of worship and other nonprofits can handle a crisis or other unexpected event – sharing information quickly and accurately with the congregation, community and media. Who should speak for a house of worship? What platform – social media, e-blast or some combination – is most effective at reaching people quickly and widely? These and other challenges will be considered. There is no registration, just come. LGA is an advertising, digital and public relations agency in Charlotte. AT LGA, Coburn and Chandler, have worked together to guide clients through crisis situations. Faith Communicators meets at 10 a.m. the fourth Friday of each month at the Cornwell Center. Its hour-long meetings are free and open to all who work in communications, marketing, social media, graphic design, development and administration for houses of worship and other nonprofits. A light breakfast is served, and the group always leaves time for informal conversation and networking. Director of Communications Ken Garfield of Myers Park United Methodist Church helps lead the group. To learn more, reach him at (704) 295-4819 or ken@mpumc.org.
