Honor a Phenomenal Woman, Nonprofit Organization or Business!

Here’s your opportunity to recognize phenomenal women, nonprofit organizations and businesses by nominating them for one of the “Phenomenal Woman: That’s Me” awards. These awards will be presented at Scarritt Bennett Center’s first annual “Phenomenal Woman: That’s Me” gala on April 7, 2016. In honor of our core values, Scarritt Bennett Center is looking for breadth of nominations as we seek to identify women, organizations and businesses who are deserving of recognition. In keeping with Scarritt Bennett Center’s commitment to diversity, we are particularly interested in nominees that reflect diversity of education, training, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, religion, physical ability, cultural background, employment status, and/or professional settings. Awards Categories The Maya Angelou Visionary Award is given to a woman who exhibits the characteristics of Maya Angelou and the core values of Scarritt Bennett Center. She is a leader in social justice and a voice in American culture for the marginalized and oppressed. She promotes activism on behalf of all who face injustice in their daily lives. Through her ongoing efforts, there has been significant movement toward reform for the marginalized and disadvantaged in the United States. The Phenomenal Woman Award is given to a woman residing in the Nashville community who exhibits the characteristics of Maya Angelou and the core values of Scarritt Bennett Center. She has worked to empower women in the community, and she seeks to challenge the societal assumptions regarding race and ethnicity that lead to injustice and inequality. She lives out the understanding that tending to the soul buoys both individual and communal renewal. The Renaissance Award is given to the nonprofit organization that demonstrates the characteristics of Maya Angelou and the core values of Scarritt Bennett Center. This organization is an exemplar in the promotion of women, as evidenced by institutional efforts and the employment of women in key leadership positions. The organization is a leader in social justice and is respected in the Nashville community. Both within its walls and in relation to those it serves, the organization works toward the equitable treatment of all. The Pioneering Woman Award is given to the business that demonstrates the characteristics of Maya Angelou and the core values of Scarritt Bennett Center. This organization has a proven track record for addressing issues of injustice and inequity in the Nashville community. It has corporate policies that seek to advance women and ethnic minorities by providing space for cultural expression and a place at the table where all are included and affirmed. The organization is visible in the Nashville community and provides education to empower people to be progressive catalysts in our city. The Still I Rise Achievement Award is awarded to a female high school senior who exemplifies the spirit of Maya Angelou and the core values of Scarritt Bennett Center. She is a person of hospitality, one who takes the extra step of kindness within her means to encourage the marginalized. This young woman demonstrates a spirit of service through on-going volunteerism and work with nonprofit organizations. The woman chosen for this award gives voice to those who do not have a voice and has been involved in activism for the creation of a more just community and world.
