John Wesley Coming to Granite Falls

First United Methodist Church of Granite Falls will host a special presentation of The Man from Aldersgate with B.J. Johnston on Sunday, May 24 at 9:30 AM – 12N in the church sanctuary. Written by playwright Brad L. Smith, The Man from Aldersgate is a one-man play taken directly from the journals of John Wesley. Through the powerful medium of drama, Wesley and his dynamic ministry are brought to life. During the performance, Wesley shares how his transformation through faith in Jesus Christ sparked a revival that changed England and America. “John Wesley’s life is an example of the power of grace to completely transform a human life” said Howard Fleming, pastor of the church. “Wesley’s story is portrayed in this drama in such a creative way that it is an inspiration to all ages and speaks to all people no matter what their faith background.” The Man from Aldersgate encourages spiritual renewal, giving the audience new insights into the importance of prayer, how personal failure can teach us to trust Christ, how religion is often the most dangerous idol of all and how a mother’s faith can shape a child’s destiny. “The play is about transformation,” said Johnston. “It’s about Wesley’s struggle with trying to earn his salvation, but realizing he could not.” John Wesley was an Anglican clergyman, evangelist and the principal founder of the Methodist Church. On May 24, 1738, Wesley attended a religious meeting at Aldersgate Street in London, where he underwent a spiritual conversion centered upon the realization that he was personally loved and accepted by God. After this transformation, he devoted his life to sharing this truth. “This performance presents an old message with a contemporary application,” said Johnston. “I truly feel like the Lord connected me with the character of Wesley, a man who by today’s standards amazes us.” Johnston, a student of Wesley for nearly 35 years, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in music and dance from Stephens College and a master’s degree in theater education from Scarritt College. He has appeared in more than 50 theatre productions throughout America and is now performing The Man from Aldersgate all over the country. Admission to the drama is FREE and open to the public.
