Minister of Congregational Care & Mission

8/13/2021

Haywood Street Congregation is an urban ministry located in Asheville, NC. Our mission is: Relationships, Above all Else. We pursue our mission in the contexts of programs that help address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and struggling in poverty.

Relationships at Haywood St. deepen in at least two profound ways: extending empathetic presence and mutually serving alongside one another.  The Minister of Congregational Care and Mission is responsible for both.  For tending to the despondent soul of an incarcerated congregant and blessing the cinder block walls of a new apartment; for swinging a hammer on a Habitat for Humanity build and undercutting traditional notions of “helping” the poor.  A typical week in this pastoral role includes:

Pastoral Care (30% / 12 hours)

Respond to the spiritual needs of congregants and companions

Visitation (public housing, invisible box of poverty, jail, hospital, psychiatric ward)

Maintain continuity of connection (initiating contact in-between crises)

Weekly presence in Respite (devotions, welcoming and departing rituals, table fellowship)

    Lead two small groups

Mission (30% / 12 hours)

Exercise discipleship (lead local mission trips with unhoused congregants)

Co-Lead companion orientation and continuing education with Companion Coordinator

Engage volunteer/ visiting groups (subvert traditional motivations for urban ministry)

Reflect theologically with summer youth camps (Carolina Cross Connection, Asheville Youth Mission)

Mentor and supervise community residents and seminarians (seasonal missionaries)

Worship (20% / 8 hours)

    Weekly worship planning and leadership

    Monthly preaching

    Occasional services (baptisms, weddings, funerals)

Administration (15% / 6 hours)

    Staff meeting

    Clergy meeting

    Managers’ meeting

    Self-care meeting

    Phone calls, email, paperwork

Miscellaneous (5% / 2 hours)
