Publisher/Associate General Secretary – The Upper Room

Discipleship Ministries, an agency of The United Methodist Church, is seeking an exceptional candidate for our vacancy of Publisher/Associate General Secretary (AGS) – The Upper Room (TUR).  The incumbent of this position will serve as the Publisher/Associate General Secretary and spiritual leader of The Upper Room (an international agency of the United Methodist Church), a global, ecumenical, and self-sustaining ministry; and as a key member of the agency’s executive staff leadership group, this position reports to the CEO/General Secretary of Discipleship Ministries.
The Upper Room has an emphasis on prayer, spiritual formation, and intentional discipleship rooted in the Wesleyan tradition. The organization publishes The Upper Room daily devotional guide in 36 languages and multiple formats, produces 20 books per year, and offers formational learning experiences, The Academy for Spiritual Formation, and Emmaus Ministries.

The Publisher/AGS communicates (written and spoken) with great passion and purpose in order to encourage people/leaders to explore the full breadth and depth of the Christian spiritual life (i.e., creating daily life with God) through prayer and formational practices for the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Leads TUR’s core team in strategic planning, evaluation, continuous improvement, financial soundness, innovation and spiritual impact in support of the overall mission and vision of Discipleship Ministries. Represents TUR and the whole of DM to UMC stakeholders, aligns staff and work of agency for ministry impact, and engages with the Board of Directors. Initiates and cultivates key relationships; listens to and engages with church leaders, customers, donors, and other partners for ministry effectiveness and expansion.
 
Additional Knowledge Required
The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge and understanding of structure and polity of The United Methodist Church, publishing industry, business management, Christian theology with focus on prayer, spiritual formation, discipleship, and Wesleyan leadership. Cultural diversity and global contextualization; adaptive leadership, team building, and resource allocation and alignment.  Demonstrated success in leadership, strategic planning, financial management, innovation, and staff development; relational and network building skills. Attentive to one’s own spiritual practices and wellbeing.

Education/Experience
Master’s or Doctorate degree; Theological education and Spiritually grounded / Ten years of experience in teaching, preaching, and writing on the spiritual life.
