Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Student Ministries is responsible for coordinating and promoting church program organizations for youth grades 6-12 and college students, with the goal of each youth becoming devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1.    Ministry

a.    Provide direction and leadership for the youth education program of the church by coordinating and promoting Bible study, discipleship training, mission education, weekly programming and other ministry activities.

b.    Organize and coordinate a balanced approach to youth ministry that includes, but is not limited to: Bible study, discipleship training, outreach, fellowship and music.

c.    Lead and organize effective youth programs implementing fellowship, worship, biblical teaching, discipleship and evangelism, as well as ministry and mission opportunities.

d.    Seek to integrate youth ministry into all phases of church life to create a culture that is intentionally intergenerational, striving to unite with and complement other church ministries.

e.    Oversee youth worship at weekly youth gatherings.

f.     Invest in youth off-site through lunches, sporting events, school functions, etc.

g.    Connect with college students helping them to engage in the life of their church.

h.    Work with the Membership/Marketing Manager to promote timeliness of ministry events through social and print media.

i.      Submit a monthly newsletter article promoting the ministry to the Office Administrator.

2.     Spiritual Growth

a.    Recruit, train and shepherd volunteer youth staff with diverse gifts and personalities.

b.    Provide counseling and spiritual direction to youth on an individual basis as needed.

c.    Coordinate discipleship teachers and curriculum.

d.    Work with Associate Pastor to create and implement yearly confirmation classes.

3.     Parent Volunteers

a.    Maintain contact with students and parents, keeping them informed of ongoing activities. Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.

b.    Support DUMC parents in effectively fulfilling their Christian parenting roles, in concert with other pastoral staff.

c.    Make sure all volunteers & chaperones have been Safe Sanctuary/Background check approved.

4.   Financial

a. Assist in the development and oversight of the youth ministry budgets.

b. Manage student fees for events and trips in conjunction with Business Manager.

c. Present a yearly youth budget proposal to the Associate Pastor for final approval by

    the Finance Committee.

5.   General

a. Attend staff meetings/gatherings as able.

b. Attend all events as required by the Senior Pastor.

c. Be willing to support the overall needs of the staff team as required by the Senior

    Pastor.

d. Support and live out the vision of Denver United Methodist

6.   Other

a. Stay current with youth ministry practices by reading, attending youth leadership

conferences, etc.

 

Job Specifications

Education or Training:  B.A. or B.S. Degree in related field, experience in senior high youth ministry, basic administrative skills, and a personal spiritual life congruent with biblical mandates for leaders.  

Knowledge and Skills:  Gifted and called to youth ministry, loves young people, and has a passion for evangelism/outreach, both personally and at the ministry level.  Self-motivated leader, capable of casting and imparting a long term vision for ministry.  Possess relational skills with students, parents and staff.

Requirements:  Must have a solid understanding of the foundations of the Christian faith and United Methodist traditions, or willingness to learn, combined with a strong desire to nurture young people in the Christian faith.  Strong, committed Christian character exemplifying the values and disciplines expected of DUMC.  Must have a high level of energy and an exciting, energetic and igniting personality striving to model Christ in all walks of life with friendly, positive, professional manner.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to pass background check and drug test.
