Communications Coordinator

Communications Ministry provides a way to generate awareness around Harrison’s ministry events, needs, activities and opportunities and package them for presentation to both the congregation and the surrounding community.  The purpose of the communicator is to keep everyone “in the know” about what is happening in the church and throughout the denomination as well as encouraging spiritual growth through stories of faith in action to bring people closer in their walk with God.  

Communication helps the congregation and community:

  • Grow spiritually
  • Be uplifted
  • Feel a part of the church family
  • Participate actively in the life of the church
  • Make informed decisions (about giving, for example)

Basic Responsibilities:
  • Promote the church’s mission through communications.
  • Maintain close interaction with church staff and council members responsible for coordinating programs of the church
  • Coordinate communications to and from members – print / electronic announcements, videos and documents
  • Promote church-related events and opportunities to church members to encourage their participation or involvement
  • Promote events and opportunities sponsored by the church to the community
  • Assemble and work with the communications team
  • Oversee the design and management of the church website
  • Manage Realm and provide support to the congregation
  • Use Realm and other social media to create engagement, dialogue and community
  • Plan and place regular and seasonal (digital) advertising

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Create a public relations plan for the church for both internal and external audiences
  • Write news releases and maintain proactive media relations
  • Write and design promotional and informational print materials
  • Ensure the church building and property and communicate “Welcome!” and promote good public relations
  • Coordinate marketing efforts of the church to support evangelism in reaching out to the community

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2 years of relevant experience required
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively across multiple audiences
  • Knowledge of journalistic principles and techniques for disseminating information through a variety of media
  • Understanding of best practices for social and digital media
  • Technical skills (website, audio-visual, etc.)
  • Ability to juggle various projects at once and manage priorities
  • Love for the United Methodist church and its people
  • A sense of mission
