Youth Ministry Director

Position Summary: The Director of Youth Ministry has overall responsibility for all facets of the youth ministry program for 6th – 12th graders. The program includes Sunday evening youth programs; Sunday morning and mid-week small groups; monthly group outings; summer mission trips; local service projects; and high school and middle school retreats. This position is also responsible for recruiting and training both adult volunteers and youth leaders.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
- Selecting and coordinating the Sunday School and small group curriculum for youth in grades 6 – 12
- Track attendance, coordinate and lead Sunday night youth activities, including leading a message, group games, supper, worship and small groups
- Coordinating and leading the Youth Praise band, monthly youth outings, Serve Sundays, Outreach events, a high school winter retreat and a middle school youth conference
- Coordinating and leading high school and middle school summer mission trips, including overseeing all fundraising activities for each
- Recruiting, mentoring and developing leadership skills of the Youth Ministry Assistant
- Mentoring the 11th and 12th grade youth leaders in the development of leadership skills, including monthly meetings and an annual youth leadership retreat
- Recruiting, overseeing, training and equipping a laity team to implement the programs and strategy outlined for the youth ministry
- Ensuring that all youth ministry volunteers are screened and comply with the requirements of the Safe Sanctuary Policy
- Coordinating confirmation classes, confirmation retreats, and logistics for confirmation Sundays
- Leading, coordinating and planning special activities such as Wednesday night small groups, Graduation Sunday, Senior High Banquet, etc.
- Provide youth pastoral support as appropriate
- Communicating to the congregation to tell youth stories supporting our Vision – Changing Lives – Making Disciples
- Leading quarterly parent meetings and an annual 6th grade youth orientation
- Supporting the College Ministry team
- Developing and managing an annual youth ministry budget
- Attending weekly staff meetings and establishing effective working relationships with the Family Ministry team and church staff
- Participating in Continuing Education events and training
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and/or comparable experience in leading and serving within a congregation
- Experience working with adolescents (paid or volunteer)
- Highly developed relational skills with a passion for walking alongside youth in their faith journeys
- Embrace the core values of FUMC and convey those values through the Youth
- An understanding of and commitment to the theology and traditions of the United Methodist faith and the willingness to model the core values of FUMC
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to ensure timely and effective communications with parents and participants utilizing a variety of technologies
- Organizational skills, as well as the willingness to take the initiative and accept accountability
- The ability to recruit, train and inspire volunteers
- Competency in the effective and appropriate use of social media, technology and Word and Excel.
- A collaborative spirit to work as part of a ministry team
