Kentucky Flood Disaster Response

News

The Western North Carolina Conference continues to hold in prayer all those impacted by the historic flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Bishop Carter has approved a $20,000 gift from the Western North Carolina Conference to the Kentucky Conference as they begin the process of responding to the needs of clergy and churches that have immediate needs beyond the scope of UMCOR.

On July 27-28, Eastern Kentucky experienced historic flooding that has claimed the lives of 37 individuals, with many more still unaccounted for. A series of storms dumped over 16 inches of rain across the area, funneling through the valleys and resulting in catastrophic flooding. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, and hundreds more severely damaged.

Please remember that we do not self-deploy to disaster areas. The Kentucky Conference is continuing to assess their needs and next steps. We will relay that information as we know more and when we receive requests for assistance. Right now, the best way to help is financially, to both the Kentucky Conference and UMCOR US Disaster Response. If you are an ERT Team Leader, now is the time to discuss your availability and capacity to respond with your team.
