Hurricane Update

As United Methodists, let us stand together in prayer and support of all of those who have been affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The state of North Carolina isn’t in the clear as we anticipate tropical force winds and rains to impact Western North Carolina. Stay alert to changes in the Hurricane Irma forecast. Hurricane Jose also looms behind, reminding us that storms are never far away.

Volunteer:

There are several ways to volunteer in Western North Carolina and areas more significantly impacted. Not all volunteers need training. Please visit our online form to volunteer. We also offer Early Response Team training that allows groups and individuals to enter disaster zones at the invitation of local emergency management officials. More info here.

Supply Relief:

Please help us build the UMCOR inventory of relief supplies.  At this time, UMCOR is in need of hygiene kits and cleaning buckets. With many potentially suffering damage to their homes from flood waters, our greatest need is cleaning buckets. Churches and individuals can assemble these supplies, deliver to one of these drop sites, and the supplies will be shipped via UMCOR to the most necessary areas. PLEASE DON’T BURDEN THE DISASTER ZONE. Collecting and sending supplies that are not requested burdens impacted communities. The most efficient method of supporting is through donating funds, volunteering, and collecting items that have been specifically requested. Also, please do not arrive on the scene without proper Early Response certification and invitation.

Early Response Team Deployment:

The Rio Texas Conference is asking for ERT’s. Only currently certified ERT members are being accepted. Teams will base out of Corpus Christi and should register here. ERT trained individuals/small groups not part of a team should register here.

The Louisiana Conference is now scheduling trained and badged ERT’s for Hurricane Harvey response. Register here.

South Georgia Conference is looking for current ERT and trained chainsaw teams to help in Chatham and other coastal counties. Lodging can be arranged in local churches; however, teams may need to cook their own meals, or use local restaurants. Interested teams can contact Luis Morales.

*New*Florida is ready for volunteers. Trained ERTs will be placed in IRMA relief and those who are not trained will be serving with recovery for Hermine and Matthew. The link to volunteer is here:  https://florida-reg.brtapp.com/hurricaneirmaregistration. For more information regarding needs in Florida, you can go their disaster response page, found here: http://www.flumc.org/disasterrecoveryministry.

At this time no other conference is requesting ERTs or other volunteers. Please do not arrive without an invitation.

Long Term Recovery:

The effects of Harvey will keep long term volunteer teams busy for years. Please be patient before sending long-term building and recovery crews. Please do not arrive without an invitation, and only after Early Response Teams have prepared the location.
