Job Description


Position Title: Youth Director
Opening beginning May/June 2018
Salary TBD based on qualifications

Position Summary:
The primary purpose of the Youth Director position is to create and supervise a growing youth ministry program and culture that effectively reaches students and families to grow in their relationship with Jesus. The Youth Director will be responsible for grades 6 through 12, providing ministries, relationships, discipleship, and outreach opportunities in the church and community that foster spiritual growth with students.

-Strategy, direction, tone, vision of Youth Ministry in alignment with the mission/vision of Mt. Zion UMC

-Creation of annual calendar for Youth Ministry 

-Effective communication and connection with Youth Leaders, Sunday School teachers, and Youth Planning Group to establish and evaluate the vision/mission of the Youth Ministry

-Christ-centered and age appropriate curriculum, discipleship, worship, retreats, mission trips, and confirmation class.

Youth Budget

-Timely and appropriate budget creation

-Adherence to annual budget

-Provide leadership and accountability for responsible use of funds

Youth Leaders/Volunteers

-Meet, train, encourage, equip, and communicate regularly with youth leaders, youth planning group, Sunday School teachers and confirmation mentors so they can better serve the students.


-Attend staff meetings weekly and connection with other areas of ministry as needed

-Connect with community as Christian witness and outreach to youth

-Parental support, communication, and education on a weekly basis to keep them informed

-Strong relationship with youth

-Counseling and guiding of youth/parents as needed


-Establish and maintain regular and ongoing communications with the Mt. Zion UMC Church body, Youth, Parents, and leaders

-Use the standard church supported communication assets: Sunday Bulletin, Monthly Newsletter, Website and Facebook

-Use a parent email list, the Youth Website, and social media apps (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc) to communicate directly with parents and students.

-Follow up with new and visiting youth

Specific Technical Knowledge

-Strong computer skills understanding and utilizing the appropriate social media and communication tools for connection with youth, parents, leaders and Mt. Zion UMC church body. (e.g. Website editing, Pro Presenter presentation software, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube)

-A general knowledge of running sound systems/equipment, lights, and projector

-Ability to guide and lead a youth worship band

Self Management (Personal Development)

-Maintains proficiency through continuing education and seminars

-Works to maintain proper boundaries through Sabbath time

-Practices spiritual disciplines for continuing development of personal relationship with Jesus Christ


-Christ like life style

-Strong verbal and writing skill

-Proven effective delegation and follow up skill\

-Effective motivation of others

-Has special gifts/talents capable of attracting youth to follow Jesus

-Willingness and desire to dedicate necessary time to develop a strong youth ministry at Mt. Zion UMC.

Education Requirements

-College Degree with focus in youth ministry (preferred)

-Seminary Education in Youth Ministry (optional)

-Leading effective Youth Ministry
