Job Title: Coordinator of African American Church Growth and Vitality
Accountable to: The Director of Equity and Justice Ministries
The Coordinator of African American Church Growth and Vitality is a key member of a team whose mission is to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. The coordinator will work with the Director of Equity and Justice Ministries and the Committee on African American Ministries to strengthen and increase the growth and vitality of African American Churches within the Western North Carolina Conference.  The coordinator will implement the African American Ministries’ Black Church Master Plan for growth.  The coordinator will envision and develop strategies with the team so that African American Churches will remain relevant and impactful in making disciples in the midst of changing demographics and cultural norms. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in cooperation and under the supervision of the Director of Equity and Justice Ministries.
  • Research best practices of church growth.
  • Develop demographics to highlight growth potential.
  • Work with African American clergy and churches resourcing them for growth and increased vitality by implementing the Black Church Master Plan and other proven programs.
  • Schedule workshops and secure leadership—including conference leadership—to address specific issues and skills that will lead to growth and increased vitality.
  • Develop smart goals and follow-up methods for measuring results.
  • Work with conference ministry teams and conference staff in understanding distinctive characteristics essential for African American church growth and vitality.
  • Attend annual conference sessions.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master of Divinity.
  • At least five years of experience in a related discipline or training, research, or ministry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Possess the gifts, grace, influence, and passion to work toward church growth and vitality for the sake of Jesus Christ (required).
  • Working knowledge of United Methodist Polity, Theology, and Doctrine (required).
  • Excellent communication skills including writing capabilities; ability to execute meetings, calls, and emails with professionalism, courtesy, and accuracy; and ability to make effective presentations (required).
  • Proficient in Zoom and other virtual meeting platforms and social media platforms (required).  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive applications; (required).
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.  
  • Ability to effectively allocate and prioritize time to several tasks to ensure completion (required).
  • Hold a valid driver's license and be properly insured.  Possess the ability to travel between churches, various communities within and outside of the Western North Carolina Conference (required).
