“Making Wesleyan Disciples in Today’s Churches”“Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.” According to Bishop Rueben P. Job, these are “three simple rules that will change your world.” Simple, direct, to the point, but not so simple to put into daily practice. And yet, John Wesley used them to develop faithful disciples who changed the trajectory of faith practices in 18th century England in ways that have brought transformation to people and communities around the world. Are you longing for a renewal of Wesleyan transformation in your own faith community right now? Has maintaining the status quo replaced seeking renewal and transformation in your walk with Christ and in your faith community? Are you ready to take the next step with God? The Rev. Steven Manskar with the United Methodist Discipleship Ministries has for years been working with United Methodist congregations around the world, helping them put into place intentional covenant discipleship groups based on John Wesley’s model and using Wesley’s three simple rules. Manskar, an elder in the Minnesota Conference, has written a book based on this work called “Disciples Making Disciples: A Guide for Covenant Discipleship Groups & Class Leaders”. Be warned: there are no quick fixes in this book. For those seeking an easy blueprint or the latest shiny plan or some instant gratification, do not get this book and do not seek to put its principles to use in your church. However, if you are ready for a serious journey with Christ with a small group of committed travelers, this book can help you develop long-term covenant discipleship groups within your church. From within the covenant discipleship groups, God will call some of the members to become class leaders within the local church who are committed to a life-long walk with Christ in service to the church and God’s creation. The Metro District has invited the Rev. Manskar to come on Saturday, March 17th, 2018, to present a workshop on how we can develop this Wesleyan model of discipleship in our churches. Prior to the workshop, the District will be holding a luncheon and information session at noon on January 31st at the Conference Center in Charlotte (3400 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte). This brief information session will be led by the District Vitality Team and the Rev. John Boggs, who has worked closely with Rev. Manskar on multiple occasions. Rev. Boggs will have more information for you that will help you make an informed and prayerful decision about how to move forward making disciples who make disciples. You are cordially invited to attend this luncheon along with some of your church leaders. Those who attend will receive a copy of Steven Manskar’s book.
