Catawba Valley Lay Servant Training
Catawba Valley Lay Servant Training will be offered on Sunday afternoons: February 9, 16, 23, and March 1, 2020.
3:00 – 5:30 pm

Each course listed below consists of four Sunday afternoon class meetings. Attendance will be required all four days in order to complete the 10 hours needed for certification.
Cost for each Lay Speaking course is $25 per student.

Courses Offered:
Basic Lay Servant Training
This basic course is the first course that must be completed by each Lay Servant. This 4-week course serves as the prerequisite for all Advanced Level Lay Servant courses.
Instructors: Dr. Stephen Pickard
Text: "Lay Servant Ministries", by Sandy Zeigler Jackson and Brian Jackson
This course is foundational for all courses in lay servant ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.
Discover Your Spiritual Gifts/Each One a Minister
** This is an advanced course. Prerequisite: Basic Lay Servant Class **
Instructor: Pete Ross
Text: "Each One a Minister" by William J. Carter
Designed to encourage individuals to discover Gods call to ministry in their own lives, Each One a Minister leads toward practical ways of using gifts in ministries in our congregations and in our communities.
Called to Preach
** This is an advanced course. Prerequisite: Basic Lay Servant Class **
Instructor: Rev. Teresa Blanton
Text: "From Pew to Pulpit: A Beginner's Guide to Preaching" by Clifton Guthrie
Called to Preach is designed for those who have not completed formal preaching training, for pastors seeking a basic refresher course, and for others who are called upon to preach in a pastor’s absence. Called to Preach is the required preaching course in the lay speaker track of study.
Lay Pastoral Care Giving
** This is an advanced course. Prerequisite: Basic Lay Servant Class **
Instructors: Dick Strachan and Jesse Caldwell
Text: "Lay Pastoral Care Giving", by Timothy Farabaugh
This course offers insights into the life span and the dynamics of contemporary life to help church leaders reach out with God’s love and care to others.
