Duke Divinity School professor Lester Ruth will conduct a free, two-part workshop on creative preaching on the sacraments on two Saturdays this summer, June 25 and July 30, from 9am-3pm each day. The workshop is based on a popular course he teaches at the Divinity School.
On the first Saturday, the workshop will look at a specialized type of preaching called mystagogy. This preaching was aimed at the newly baptized in the early church and sought to tie their experience of God in the sacraments to the story of salvation as found in the Bible.
On the second Saturday, participants will have a chance to preach a sermon based on what they have seen in the early church sources.
Lunch is not included, though there will be plenty of coffee. Every participant should acquire their own copy of Edward Yarnold’s The Awe-Inspiring Rites of Initiation. Participants will use the sermons in it.
