Jungian Psychology and Celtic Spirituality: Resources for a Grounded Mysticism
The Retreat will seek to address the deep hunger for a soulful spirituality, one which overcomes the centuries-old splits between matter and spirit, earth and heaven, body and soul – or, in psychological language the split between conscious and unconscious. Drawing on the relatively young discipline of Jungian or analytical psychology, and the ancient wisdom which nourished our Celtic ancestors, Dr. Wright will propose what might be called a “grounded mysticism” which honors the innumerable ways the resources of the deep unconscious seeks expression or incarnation. Attention will be given to inclusive god-images and religions which challenge fear-based claims to superior and exclusive truth which tear at the fabric of our individual and collective lives. The Retreat will provide a creative space for considering a new religious/spiritual paradigm which seems to be on the horizon, begging for midwives to assist in its birthing. No previous knowledge of Celtic spirituality nor Jungian psychology is required for full participation.
Jerry R. Wright is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Flat Rock, NC. An experienced retreat/conference leader, he has also led pilgrimages to Iona, Scotland, Ireland, Peru, and India. Dr. Wright’s doctoral thesis, Symbols For The Christ In The Gospel Of John And The Archetypal Self In The Psychology Of C.G. Jung, and his Jungian thesis, Archetypal Thin Places: Experiencing The Numinosum explored his passion for analytical psychology, Celtic spirituality, and the experience of the numinous (sacred or holy) in the practice of Jungian analysis, as well as in everyday life. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Re-Imagining God and Religion: Essays for the Psychologically Minded to be released in early 2018.
